Ribbon Cutting for Riley the Axolotl
Today was a special day at the Hands on Science Center in Tullahoma. There was a ribbon cutting for the new Axolotl exhibit. A lot of people have asked me, "What's an axolotl?" The answer is it is a rare salamander from Mexico. Check out the video at the end of this article for a quick look at Axolotls.
The HOSC decided to have a naming contest for schools to name the new axolotl. It was my privilege to read a Mayor's proclamation declaring "Riley" as the Official Axolotl of Tullahoma. The naming of Riley turned out to be a pretty special event. Here's a part of the proclamation that tells the story:
WHEREAS, the recent community naming initiative for the Center’s axolotl brought together citizens in a shared spirit of creativity, enthusiasm, and civic pride; and
WHEREAS, among many thoughtful and imaginative submissions, the name “Riley” was selected by the community not only for its charm and inclusivity, but for the meaningful story it represents; and
WHEREAS, the name “Riley” was submitted by Nolan Hice in honor of his beloved younger brother, Riley, whose life, though far too brief, left a lasting and profound impact on all who knew him; and
WHEREAS, Riley was born with heart complications related to Down Syndrome, and his life stands as a testament to resilience, love, and the deep connections that bind families and communities together; and
WHEREAS, Nolan Hice shared that the name “Riley” felt especially fitting, as it can represent either a boy or a girl—just as the axolotl’s sex will remain unknown until it reaches one year of age—making the name both meaningful and uniquely appropriate; and
WHEREAS, through this naming, the community has chosen not only a name, but a story—one filled with love, remembrance, and enduring significance;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the City of Tullahoma hereby officially designates the axolotl residing at the Hands-On Science Center as
“RILEY,” THE OFFICIAL AXOLOTL OF TULLAHOMA
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED that this designation serves as a tribute to the memory of Riley, honoring a life that continues to inspire compassion, unity, and kindness throughout our community.

It was my honor to read the proclamation for the Hice Family and the classmates of Nolan Hice. The Tullahoma Chamber of Commerce was present to conduct an official ribbon-cutting for the new axolotl exhibit. There was a great crowd from the chamber to help the students celebrate.
Happy Birthday Bill Boss!
Long time HOSC volunteer and science demonstrator Bill Boss also celebrated a milestone. Today was Bill's 90th birthday. Bill conducted a science demonstration for the students and in return the students sang "Happy Birthday" to Bill. Congrats to Bill and congrats to the HOSC for a great event.
I encourage everyone to drop by the Hands On Science Center and check out Riley. And check out this video on what makes the Axolotl so special.
